A Wake in the Current

A friend of mine posted a link on Facebook to a project that a friend of his was doing. When I clicked and found out that it was a project by kids my age, raising money for two charities that benefit homeless youth I was obviously intrigued.

A Wake in the Current is a project started by Bowman Hitchens, Max Zoghbi, David Bonnoitt, and Rob Treppendah, all students at LSU or Ole Miss who are currently finishing up their last semester. Instead of looking for a "real" job (like everyone keeps telling me I should) these guys are going to kayak the Mississippi River, all 2,300 miles of it, in roughly 60 days. All proceeded from their trip will benefit two charities, The Gardere Community Christian School and Interfaith Compassion Ministry. The journey will begin on June 19th and will last most of the summer. So far the group has not only started training and preparing for their trip but they have solicited sponsorships from companies as big as Ole Miss Outdoors, Smoothie King, and Lamar. They have also spoke to groups from Charlotte to Alabama about their adventure, securing donations and pledges per mile.

While securing these sponsorships is no easy feat in itself the actual trip is no joke. According to their video less people have completed this adventure than have hiked Mt. Everest or have visited outer space. So, if you're interested and want to donate, or simply want to keep track of their trip, follow them on twitter or check out their website.

If nothing else check out this video about their trip and exactly what they will be doing.
